Free Attention Giveaway at WalMart
While making a quick stop into WalMart, I approached the check-out lines with approximately six things in my hands. Of course, there were only two checkers open and the lines were pretty bad. I was third in line, when a nice lady offered to let me check-out before her because she had a huge basket of groceries. I thanked her and stepped in front of her cart.
While I was waiting for the checker to finish with the customer in front of me, I looked her (the lady who let me go ahead of her) in the eye and asked how she was doing. A big smile light up her face. She told me that she was good and continued to talk about her family and her dog that she just adores. I listened to her talk while I was checking out. As I gathered my things, I turned to her and told her that it was good talking to her and thanked her again for her generosity. I silently prayed for her and her family as I walked toward the door.

Here’s what I like about this story. First, Jacqueline got OA’d by the lady with the large cart of stuff. This lady was paying attention to others around her and offered a small act of kindness to J, who was holding six items. I’m pretty sure this kind of otherlyness is contagious.
Second, J (no doubt basking in the glow of being OA’d) intentionally gave HER attention to the lady who had been kind to her. That doesn’t always happen, but often is the natural reaction to someone paying attention to YOU. Way to LISTEN, J.
Third, J seemed to extend the OA practice to some unauthorized prayer for this woman and her family. Another free attention giveaway that will, no doubt, cement this lady in J’s mind and heart for a long time.
A double OA with a reverse twist. Nice.

I was thinking the same thing!
I firmly believe that if the Christian community at large gets OAing, we will discover that it is indeed contagious. Everybody hopes that things can be at least a little better. People act differently when they see their hopes realized!
