OA In The News
It’s encouraging to find good news now and then in the media. In the world of sports, competition tends to make people a little less than “otherly” or generous…especially when the game (and in this case, a title) is on the line. A friend sent me this link to a story and thought it was a great example of what Ordinary Attempts are all about, and that we should put it on our site somewhere.
It’s about a college softball game a few weeks ago between Western Oregon University and Central Washington University, where a senior player, who had never hit a home run in her career, hit one out of the park. On her way around first base, she wrecked her leg and fell to the ground in pain. The rules said that her team mates could not help her round the bases, and if she did not round them, the home run would not count. What happened will bring a smile (and maybe a tear or two) to your face. Enjoy.

Thanks for sharing this Randy - it’s a great example of people first noticing what matters to someone else then doing something about it.

I hate to be a wet blanket on this warm fuzzy story (that I posted), but I’m pretty sure this wouldn’t have happened at a guys baseball game. Sorry if that sounds sexist, but I just can’t imagine a male version of this. Not when doing this meant losing the game. And the title.
Is it just me? Can anyone else imagine a men’s baseball playoff game where this exact thing happens?
Are women naturally more otherly than men? Are men more competitive by nature (meaning winning means more to them) than women?
(Am I sounding like Mark Driscoll?)

I think the last place I saw this posted was on Grace’s blog. Every time I watch it I simply cannot belive it’s NOT a parody.
At any rate - thanks for a great post. I was truly moved by what was goin on there on the field that day. There IS hope for our future if this is what’s happening on the campuses!

So you’re saying that only men who piss sitting down would be otherly in a title game?
Holy moly…I almost pissed my pants laughing (and apparently that word is GOD’S word, so I can now safely use it in church)! That is hilarious…and sad at the same time. Thanks for making my day, Ken!

I burned a copy of the SportsCenter video on this. It’s even more amazing to hear the girls explain it in their own words. I’ll try and remember to bring it to you Randy.
BTW For some reason you blog feeds are not being uploaded to Newsgator. I finally started wondering why I hadn’t seen any posts and jumped over here to see I was missing out.
