Practicing OA’s For Class
Jacci Turner is leading a Doable Evangelism Course at Sparks Christian Fellowship. She’s sending me the OA stories that her “students” are sending to her during the four-week course. Here’s a sample:
Finding myself praying for a lot of bikers, lot of tatoos out there (Street Vibrations in Reno this week). Babies, children ,teens, & young mothers frequently catch my attention for prayer. I’m at the Sparks library and just went into an artists’ presentation, Russ Lopez, he carves and does photography. I said hi and asked him how he was doing. He said “I’ve been better.” Looked around at the empty room and went back and started asking questions about his art and listened to his answers. (The DE) class and book (Evangelism Without Additives) had prompted me to ask questions. It gave him some true attention about something important to him and was interesting for me. Also at my last Weight Watcher’ meeting I got into a conversation with a young woman where I was doing a lot of talking. Then she spotted a friend she hadn’t seen in awhile. I overheard her talking to her friend about the recent deaths, within the last two or so weeks, of both her grandfather, who had raised her from infancy, and her father. I keep thinking that if I had been more open and listening I would have been more available to meet her need rather than just my own. I used to think of myself as a good listener, but not so much. I’m working on it.

I feel your pain, Kathy. As a person addicted to talking, I can tell you that it’s not an easy habit to break, but I think that if I can just listen a little more everyday, then when I have something important to say, it will all come together.
